How Visibility Rules Work
Visibility rules hide content until a user meets the conditions you set. Rules can use progress, answers, dates and times, time on the platform, tags, or active offers, and date-based rules can follow the hub time zone or each user's local time.
Visibility rules control what users see and when. You can reveal content as someone progresses, reaches a date and time, carries specific tags, or meets other conditions.
Where visibility rules appear
Visibility rules are available for:
- Journeys: Settings → Visibility
- Milestones: Settings → Visibility
- Steps: the step editor's Visibility settings
- Conversations: the Conversation's Advanced Visibility settings
- The whole Conversations section: Conversations → Page Settings → Visibility
When a user doesn't meet the rules, the item is hidden from that user.
Condition types
You can build rules from eight condition types:
- Finished a Step: the user completed a selected step.
- Answered a Question: the user submitted an answer to a selected question.
- Choose a Specific Answer: the user selected a particular multiple-choice option.
- On or After a Date: the content becomes visible on a selected date and time.
- Before a Date: the content remains visible until a selected date and time.
- Time on Platform: the user's account has been active for a selected number of days or hours.
- User Tags: the user has all, any, or none of the selected tags.
- Active Offer: the user currently has access through a selected offer.
Set the time zone for a rule
Date rules include a Time and Time Zone setting. New rules use 9:00 AM unless you choose another time.
Choose one time zone mode:
- Hub Time Zone uses the hub's time zone for everyone. If the hub doesn't have its own, it uses the organization's time zone.
- User's local time evaluates the same date and time in each user's browser time zone.
Use Hub Time Zone when everyone should get access at the same moment. Use User's local time when content should appear at the same local clock time for each user.
For Time on Platform, an unlock time and time zone apply to day-based rules. Hour-based rules use the elapsed number of hours directly.
Combine conditions
Use AND when every condition must be true. Use OR when any condition can be true. You can also nest groups to build logic such as “finished Step A AND has Tag X or Tag Y.”
No rules means visible
If you don't add visibility rules, the item is visible to users who can otherwise access it. The item must still be published, and parent-level visibility or access rules can still hide it.
Preview before saving
Use Preview in the visibility editor to check how the rule behaves before you save it.
Frequently asked questions
- What happens when a user doesn't meet the conditions?
- The item is hidden until the conditions are met. A parent rule can also hide everything below it, such as a journey, milestone, or the whole Conversations section.
- Should I use Hub Time Zone or User's local time?
- Use Hub Time Zone for one shared release moment. Use User's local time when content should appear at the chosen clock time wherever each user is.
- Can I drip content over time?
- Yes. Use **On or After a Date** for scheduled releases or **Time on Platform** for access based on how long the user's account has been active.
- Can I gate content by offer or tag?
- Yes. Use **Active Offer** for selected offers or **User Tags** for all, any, or none of the tags you choose.
