What Is a Step?
A step is one focused action inside a milestone. It can guide a user with AI, provide fixed guidance, create options or a timeline, or assemble completed work into a downloadable deliverable.
Steps are where users turn your guidance into work. Every milestone contains one or more steps, and each step should have a clear finish line: an answer, a decision, a plan, or a completed piece of work.
What users do in a step
Depending on the step type, a user may answer questions, work with an AI-generated response, choose from generated options, follow a timeline, or download a finished document. Completing steps fills the milestone's progress.
The five step types
- Regular: the user answers questions and OBIE creates a personalized response using your prompt and context.
- Fixed Guidance: OBIE generates the response from your prompt, but users can't edit it manually. They can regenerate it, copy it, or use Enhance with AI.
- Timeline: creates a multi-day event with session types and separate questions and prompts.
- Option: has OBIE generate a set of 2–10 options for the user to choose from.
- Deliverable: combines selected step outputs into a live document. It uses no AI, has no questions or token cost, and users can copy it or download it as a hub-branded PDF or Markdown file. A Deliverable can't include another Deliverable or be used as context for other steps.
Deliverable steps are added manually; the AI Hub Builder doesn't generate them.
What creators configure
A step can include:
- a Step Title users see in the milestone,
- a Prompt that tells OBIE what to produce and how to guide the user,
- Questions that collect the user's input,
- Context from earlier steps,
- content and appearance settings, and
- Visibility rules that control when it appears.
The available controls change with the step type. For example, a Deliverable step lets you choose and order the completed step outputs it includes instead of asking questions or calling AI.
How AI uses context
For AI-generated steps, OBIE can use the step prompt, the user's answers, core-question answers, required earlier steps, and relevant documents. This lets later work build on what the user already completed instead of starting over.
Custom labels
"Steps" is the default label. You can rename it to Actions, Tasks, Exercises, Lessons, or another term under Hub Settings → Customize.
Frequently asked questions
- Can a step have more than one question?
- Yes. Add the questions the step needs, then mark individual questions Required or Core when appropriate.
- What question types are available?
- Short Answer, Long Answer, Choice, Multiple Choice, Content (Intermission), and File Upload. File Upload accepts PDF, DOCX, TXT, or MD files up to 10 MB.
- What's the difference between a step and a Conversation?
- A step has a defined finish line inside a journey. A Conversation is open-ended support a user can return to over time.
- Does every step use AI?
- No. Regular, Fixed Guidance, Timeline, and Option steps use AI. Deliverable steps don't make an AI call; they assemble selected completed-step outputs into a live document.
